On July 19, 1969, the Studio Museum in Harlem opened "Harlem Artists '69," the culminating group exhibition in the Museum's first exhibition season. ⠀

In his introduction for the exhibition catalogue, then exhibition coordinator Theodore Gunn shared that the goal of the show was to "bring younger Black artists together with each other and with the Harlem community." Gunn, along with Betty Blayton Taylor, presented this exhibition as a way to encourage the development and growth of Black artists.

This catalogue celebrates the work of the fifty-three artists featured.
