Founded in 2023 by writer Amarie Gipson, The Reading Room is a Houston-based independent reference library dedicated to increasing access to Black art and culture through literature, print media and community engagement.
The Reading Room hosts curated events, including artist talks, film screenings, and interactive workshops, all designed to foster a deeper connection to the library’s growing collection of 700+ books. Although the books are not for loan or purchase, a rotating selection of the library’s collection is available to browse in person at our semi-permanent space inside Sanman Studios.
With nearly a decade of experience in the realms of fine art, music and media, Gipson built The Reading Room with a desire to share her deep passion for Black culture and advance a new model for librarianship and public institution building.
