This month, The Reading Room HTX presents a series of programs to celebrate Black August—an annual commemoration of the Black liberation struggle, Black political prisoners and fallen freedom fighters.

Co-organized with multidisciplinary artist Sha’Na “Shay” Smith and inspired by the Freedom Archive, we have assembled a selection of 60+ books found in the prison cell of influential author and revolutionary George Jackson, whose 1971 assassination in San Quentin prison was a catalyst for the creation of Black August.

Throughout the month, join us for a series of free community events rooted in the four pillars of Black August: Study. Fast. Train. Fight. Each week, we explore a new pillar through workshops, film, and collective movement.
